  2. Is it true that if I get a really good quality helmet it will last me forever?
  3. Is it better to buy a more expensive helmet – will it be safer because it is pricier?
  4. I have an expensive and highest safety bicycle helmet – can I use that for horse riding?
  5. My riding school rents out helmets, so I don’t need one of my own right?
  6. How do I keep my horse riding helmet clean?

1. How do I choose the right size horse riding helmet?

Helmet sizes mentioned on our website are based on the circumference of your head in centimeters. A small size helmet doesn’t mean it is suitable for children, nor does a larger size mean it will be suitable for adults – it differs from person to person based on their head size. You can learn step by step how to measure your helmet by reading in our blog post: how to measure for a helmet. All you will need is a soft measuring tape. Remember your hairstyle can also affect the size of your helmet. If you have long hair, tie your hair in a low ponytail for the most accurate measurement. It is also good to wear your hair this way when you ride, if you try to fold your hair up into the helmet it will affect the fit. Don’t wear any clips in your hair in the space where the helmet goes – this will be really uncomfortable.

2. Is it true that if I get a really good quality helmet it will last me forever?

Unfortunately, this is a big misconception. In fact, a helmet needs to be replaced after any hard impact, even after is has been dropped on a hard floor. And it is even advisable to replace your helmet every five to six years depending on how often you rider in it, even if it hasn’t been involved in a fall or been dropped. Helmets exposed to extreme temperatures need to be replaced more often – so it is advised to keep your helmet in a cool place and NOT in a hot car or extremely cold room.

3. Is it better to buy a more expensive helmet – will it be safer because it is pricier?

Price and safety are in no way linked when it comes to equestrian riding helmets. The is great news for parents of new riders and for budget-conscious equestrians. The most important consideration for a safe helmet is actually how it fits, because all safety certified (VG1, Kitemarked, ASTM/SEI) helmets offer the same level of protection and are certified accordingly. The more expensive helmets might have different or more advanced technology, new types of materials, advances in design but it does not make the helmet any safer. Non-ASTM/SEI-certified helmets offer no protection whatsoever and are strictly for cosmetic purposes.

4. I have an expensive and highest safety bicycle helmet – can I use that for horse riding?

No. All sporting helmets are extensively researched and designed specifically for impacts related to that sport. Bicycle helmets, skiing helmets or other sport helmets are not suitable for horseback riding. The type of impact or injury you sustain in a horse riding accident can be very different than any other sports because the speeds, heights and trajectories would be completely different.

5. My riding school rents out helmets, so I don’t need one of my own right?

When you are starting riding lessons, it is fine to rent or borrow a helmet from your riding school. But if you have decided you want to commit to the sport it is a good idea to get your very own helmet that is fitted perfectly to your head. Click here for a guide on how to correctly measure your head for a helmet. You also will know exactly the condition, and therefore safety of your own helmet. It is also way more hygienic than wearing a riding school helmet that has been used and sweated in by other riders.

6. How do I keep my horse riding helmet clean?

Your helmet will likely be damp inside after you ride from sweat. Your helmet should be allowed to air dry naturally before you store it away in a bag. You can get a helmet hanger where you can place the helmet to air. Most helmets will come with removable inserts and these can be washed normally in the washing machine, but never put your entire helmet in the washing machine, and only use cleaning products specifically made for riding helmets. For the outer shell we like to use baby wipes that are gentle enough to wipe away dust without harsh chemicals. An antibacterial spray can be used to spray on the inside of the helmet before you store them away – don’t ever overuse any cleaning items on your helmet.

Storing your helmet correctly will also help keep it clean, hygienic and safe. Always keep your helmet in a cool dry place. It is best to keep it at home or in a tack room. Never leave your helmet in a hot car or in direct sunlight for long periods – extreme weather can affect the structural integrity and safety of the helmet. Most helmets will come with a simple carry bag when you buy them, but you can also buy a specially made helmet bag like this helmet bag or an equipment bag like this carry bag.
